The page order that confuses everyone printing a folded program, explained once, with a diagram — and why our files are already arranged for you.

This is the single most common thing that goes wrong when someone prints a funeral program themselves, and it is not a mistake on your part — it is how folded paper works.

Reading order versus printing order

A four-page program is one sheet of paper, printed on both sides, folded once. When you read it, the pages go 1, 2, 3, 4. But when it is flat on the printer bed, the pages are not in that order at all:

Fold that sheet in half and the pages land in reading order. Arrange them any other way and they do not. The arrangement is called imposition, and the two-page-side-by-side layout is called a printer spread.

Why most templates get you into trouble

A Word template or a Canva design gives you four pages in reading order, because that is how you edit them. When you print that file double-sided you get page 1 and page 2 on one sheet, pages 3 and 4 on another — two sheets, wrong order, no fold. People then try to fix it by reordering pages by hand, which works but takes an hour and usually goes wrong once.

Eight and twelve pages

It gets less intuitive as pages are added, because a booklet is several nested sheets. For eight pages the outer sheet carries 8 and 1 on one side, 2 and 7 on the other; the inner sheet carries 6 and 3, then 4 and 5. The general rule for a booklet of n pages, on sheet s counting from zero:

Front of sheet: page (n − 1 − 2s) on the left, page 2s on the right.
Back of sheet: page (2s + 1) on the left, page (n − 2 − 2s) on the right.

You do not need to remember any of that. It is worth knowing why the numbers look wrong when you glance at a printed sheet.
