Funeral booklets

Funeral booklets — eight or twelve pages, imposed and ready to print

When there is more to say than a folded sheet will hold — a long life, a full order of service, a page of photographs, tributes from three generations — the answer is a booklet. Ours come as eight or twelve pages, already imposed for saddle stitching, with bleed and crop marks for a print shop and an exact-size file for the printer at home.

  1. Eight pages, or twelve. Eight holds the order of service, the obituary in full, a page of photographs and a tributes page. Twelve adds a second photo page, the readings printed in full, and room for a longer life.
  2. Imposed, not just exported. A saddle-stitched booklet prints two pages to a side and is folded and stapled through the spine, so page 8 sits beside page 1 on the sheet. Ours arrive that way; you print, fold and staple.
  3. Photographs that print sharp. The photo page takes the family's own pictures, and the editor warns you before you buy if one is too small to print at 300 dpi.

A finished program, not a blank template

Most "funeral templates" are a layout you still have to design, on a day you have no time for it. This is different: type the details once, and every piece is made for you — matching, print-ready, checked.

A template in a design app · an evening

You do the designing

  • Pick one of hundreds that look alike, then type the same name into six boxes.
  • Resize the photo yourself and hope it prints sharp.
  • Work out which page goes where when the sheet is folded.
  • Export, guess at bleed and margins, print, find the back is upside down.
  • Start again for the prayer card, the bookmark, the sign — none of them match.
  • Nobody to ask when it goes wrong at the copy shop.
Here · about ten minutes

You enter the details; we make every piece

  • Name, dates, order of service, obituary, a photo — once. Every page appears as you type.
  • The photo is placed, framed and checked for print quality; you are told if it is too small.
  • Pages are already in printing order, with bleed and crop marks for the shop and exact size for home.
  • What you see on screen is the PDF, to a third of a millimetre — proven on every build.
  • 58 designs, each making the program, cards, bookmark, sign, guest book and slideshow to match.
  • Free corrections after you pay, and a person who answers when a print goes wrong.

$29 for the program, $59 for the complete set — one payment, files in minutes, nothing shipped. Choose a design and start

How a booklet is put together

A saddle-stitched booklet is made of folded sheets nested inside one another and stapled through the fold. That means the pages are printed out of order: on an eight-page booklet, the first sheet carries pages 8 and 1 on one side and pages 2 and 7 on the other. Getting that wrong is the single most common way a home-printed booklet is ruined, and it is why our home-printer file comes already arranged — it looks shuffled flat, and falls right when folded.

Because of the fold, a booklet's page count is always a multiple of four. Eight and twelve are what families use; a sixteen-page booklet is possible for a very long life and can be arranged on request.

What to put on the extra pages

The pages an eight-page booklet gains over a folded sheet are usually: a photograph page (four to six pictures with captions), a tributes page ("survived by" in full, the grandchildren by name, a paragraph from each of the children), and a page for a reading or a poem printed in full so the congregation can follow it. The twelve-page adds a second photograph page — often the early years on one and the later ones on the other — and room for a life story that runs to a thousand words.

What to write in each section is set out in what to include in a funeral program, and the standard phrasings in funeral program wording.

Printing a booklet

At a copy shop: send the print-shop PDF and say "8.5 × 11 flat, folded to 5.5 × 8.5, saddle-stitched, 100 lb text matte, file has bleed and crop marks". Any shop can do it, usually the same day, and the staples are what make it feel like a booklet rather than a stack.

At home: print the home-printer file at 100% scale, double-sided, flipping on the short edge, then fold the stack together and staple twice through the spine with a long-reach stapler — or take the folded stack to a shop and ask them to staple it, which most will do for a couple of dollars. The whole procedure is in how to print a funeral program.

Questions

How many pages should a funeral booklet be?
Eight for most services — order of service, obituary, photographs and tributes. Twelve for a long life with many photographs or a full reading printed out. Page counts are always a multiple of four because of the fold.
What size is a funeral booklet?
5.5 × 8.5 inches folded, printed on 8.5 × 11 sheets, or A5 folded from A4. Both sizes are included with every design here.
Can I print a saddle-stitched booklet at home?
Yes. The home-printer file is already imposed, so you print double-sided at 100%, flip on the short edge, fold the stack and staple twice through the spine. A long-reach stapler helps; a copy shop will staple a folded stack for a dollar or two.
What paper should a funeral booklet be printed on?
100 lb text matte is the usual choice — heavy enough to feel right, light enough that eight or twelve pages still fold flat. Cover stock is too stiff for the inside pages of a booklet.
How much does a funeral booklet cost here?
The eight-page booklet is a one-time payment, and the complete set — booklet, prayer cards, bookmarks, thank-you cards, sign and guest book — costs less than the booklet and cards bought separately. Printing is what your copy shop charges.
