A typical order of service

Christian funerals vary by denomination and by congregation, but a common shape is: a processional or entrance as the family is seated; a call to worship or opening prayer; a hymn; one or more scripture readings, often from the Psalms, the Gospels and the Epistles; a eulogy or remembrances from family and friends; a sermon or message from the pastor; a prayer; a closing hymn; a benediction; and the recessional. Some traditions include a viewing before the service or a committal at the graveside afterwards, which the program can note on the back page.

Print the name of each person taking part next to their item — the reader, the soloist, the one giving the eulogy — and the hymn numbers or titles. Ask the pastor or church office to look over the order before you print; they will know the customs of that congregation. Scripture, hymns and the words guests take home

Families often print one or two verses in full — Psalm 23, John 14:1–6, 2 Timothy 4:7, Revelation 21:4, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 — either on the cover under the photo or on the back page. The verse library has the most requested passages ready to paste; use the translation your church uses if it matters to the family. For hymns, a title and number is enough when the church has hymnals; where it does not, print the full words of the hymns the congregation will sing so everyone can join in. The obituary, 'survived by', and the acknowledgement

The obituary in a church program is a life story, usually three to five short paragraphs: birth and childhood, faith and church life, family and work, what they loved, and how they died if the family wishes to say. It often ends with the list of those who survive them — spouse, children and their spouses, grandchildren, siblings — and those who went before. The acknowledgement on the back page is the family's thanks: to the pastor and the church, to caregivers, to friends who brought meals and sat with them. A single sentence is enough, and a familiar verse beneath it closes the program gently.

Questions

Is this suitable for any denomination?
The program is a blank you fill; nothing in it is fixed to one tradition. Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Pentecostal and non-denominational families use the same layout and enter their own order of service.
Can I print the full words of the hymns?
Yes. Paste them into the order of service or on a page of their own. The preview shows when a page runs long; move up to the eight-page program if it does.
How should the 'survived by' section be worded?
Most families write it as a short paragraph after the obituary: 'She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John; her children ...; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by ...'. The guide has variations.
