LDS funeral program template — the order a ward service follows

A Latter-day Saint funeral is a meeting: conducted by the bishop, held in the chapel, and shaped around hymns, prayers, a life sketch and a doctrinal message. The program is a single sheet or a folded card that names the parts and the people. This page gives that order, and a program that prints it in an hour.

  2. The life sketch. The part that is distinctly ours: a few minutes on where they were born, the family, the mission, the temple marriage, the callings and the work. It is written like an obituary and often read from one.
  3. What the bishopric arranges. The bishop conducts and confirms the speakers, the music and the length. Print the program after that conversation, not before — and leave room, because a ward service often gains a speaker.

The order of a Latter-day Saint funeral service

A family prayer is offered with the family before the service begins, usually in a room off the chapel, and it is not printed in the program. The service itself runs: prelude music; opening hymn; invocation; a musical number; the life sketch; one or two speakers who knew them; a further musical number; a doctrinal message, usually from the bishop or a member of the stake presidency; closing hymn; benediction. At the cemetery, the grave is dedicated by someone holding the Melchizedek Priesthood, named in the program if the family wishes.

Hymns most often chosen are "Abide with Me", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives", "Where Can I Turn for Peace?", "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "God Be with You Till We Meet Again". The editor's order-of-service library has this whole sequence ready to edit, so it is a matter of typing the names beside each part.

Writing the life sketch

The life sketch is a short biography read aloud, usually three to five minutes: born where and to whom, schooling, mission and where it was served, marriage and where it was solemnised, children, work, callings, and the things they were known for. It is written like an obituary, and many families write it once and use it for both.

What the program prints, and what it leaves out

A ward program is plain by custom: the name, the dates, the meetinghouse and time, the order of the service with the names beside each part, the pallbearers, the interment, and a line of thanks. Photographs are common on the cover and inside. Sacred temple matters are not detailed, and the program does not print the words of prayers or ordinances.
